EVE Blog Banter #12: I Don't Own a Working Phone.

EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week to post articles pertaining to the said topic. The resulting articles can either be short or quite extensive, either funny or dead serious, but are always a great fun to read! Any questions about the EVE Blog Banter should be directed here. Check out other EVE Blog Banter articles at the bottom of this post!

This month's banter comes to us from CrazyKinux himself, who asks the following: First there was the MMO on the PC, and now with the recent announcement of DUST 514, EVE will soon be moving onto consoles. But what about mobile? Allow your imagination to run wild for a second and describe how you would see EVE being ported to mobile devices, whether the iPhone/iPod touch, Blackberrys or Android-based devices. Dream the impossible for us!

I bet this is a good question actually. Sadly, I'm the least qualified blogger to talk about this.

If you're reading this through capsuleer on an iPhone, be advised that I have no idea how the heck you're doing that. Actually... be advised that I don't even know what an iPhone looks like. I actually typed Iphone first before looking it up to see how the thing was spelled.

Let me tell you a little something about me. I've bought two phones in my lifetime. These are phones you buy out of Wal-Mart that you have to buy minutes for or they're useless. I've never bought minutes for either of those two phones. According to the display on my last one, I need to put minutes on it by September 4th 2007, or it's going to need reactivating. Good to know.

The latest phone I bought came with 20 minutes, I used three. Mostly I just hang up on people that call me and then turn the phone off.

I also deleted all applications and games from it as soon as I got it. It's mostly just a paperweight. That said? Read the post beneath this one for actual content. Sorry CK.

    1. Whew!! Good to know I am not alone. Ditto your comments about celphones. I own a Tracphone for family emergencies and when I'm on the road. Other than that, it stays in my car or in a basket at the house. At my age, I can't see al those tiny keys and could not even imagine how one would play a game like EvE on an itty-bitty phone. Bah, them kids!! :-)

    2. I will be honest. Capsuleer was a contributing factor for my iPod Touch purchase. I have a normal phone for my cel phone, no camera, none of that stuff. I will most likely never buy an iPhone as I have holding a brick up to my ear.

Internet devices, such as the Touch or a tablet like device would really be the focus here. Something on a phone is just not realistic as the screen is too bloody small.

    3. At Latro: I am one of them kids, just not with the times I suppose.

At Ga'Len: How exactly does an internet device work then?

    4. Mobiles will be good to a certain degree, but I do hope CCP sticks to the main server based application and doesn't go awry by investing too much time and effort into Mobile devices.

I am very much like yourself in that I have rarely used mobile devices especially for gaming. Now I am old school, so who knows what this new generation may want or expect.

It may be also the landscape of mobile devices could change radically in another decade where playing EvE Online from one of these devices might be more feasible (e.g. roll-up display screens that you can put in your backpack, server based processing, etc)

    5. @Ga'len: Capsuleer was also the reason I purchased my iTouch, but the longer I have the device the more I love it and find to do with it. I probably spend as much or more time on it reading email, blog posts, and forums as I do my laptop. I love the games (Geo-Defense Swarm is the latest addiction). Could not tolerate my commute without the podcasts, audio books, and music. It's already teh best damn thing since sliced bread. An EVE game on it would make it just that much better.

Like you, I have a low tech cell phone; iPhone seemed like a dumb expense when you spend 99% of your time on a farm where there is no cell service. However, with the job and commute I have now, I'm reconsidering an iPhone because then at least with a data package, I could do some "fun" Web-based stuff at work at lunch (gov't LAN security precludes this on my work computer).

@Hallan: You are intriguingly eccentric; almost a Luddite! That's just part of your charm, I guess. I miss flying with you.
