EVE Blog Banter #13: Fatal Rabbit

Welcome to the thirteenth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week to post articles pertaining to the said topic. The resulting articles can either be short or quite extensive, either funny or dead serious, but are always a great fun to read! Any questions about the EVE Blog Banter should be directed here. Check out other EVE Blog Banter articles at the bottom of this post!

The first banter of this 2nd year of EVE Blog Banters comes to us fromZargyl from A Sebiestor Scholar, who asked the following: On the EVE Fanfest 2009 page are pictures of prizes for the Silent Auction that was held during the event. One of these photos was entitled “Design your own EVE mission”. My question now would be what kind of mission would you write if you got that prize? What would the mission be about? Would it be one using the new system of epic mission arks? What would be the story told by it? Feel free to expand upon his questions and put together your very own mission!

"Hallan! We were looking for you," Orvyllerier Allerande, Guristas Agent, said with a smile, "We've got a problem. The Cartel came for a visit a few days back," Hallan leaned onto Orvy's desk and grinned. Orvy continued to speak, "Yeah, don't smile, we had our fleet dealing with a fucking 0.0 alliance, and they managed to get some troops onto the station before we called the fleet back to deal with it,"

"Ok," Hallan started, "So what, you want advice on how not to get fucked in the ass now?"

"Shut the fuck up. They left us a message," Orvy rolled his eyes and picked up a datapad, "This mission comes straight from the Rabbit. You already know that fucking with the old man can be hard on your health, but Rabbit is a close second when he's angry," Orvy hit some keys on the datapad and handed it to Hallan.

Hallan tried to suppress a laugh as he looked at the image, "Not exactly subtle is it?"

"No it ain't," Orvy cleared his throat and continued to speak, "I've already uploaded the location of the nearest Cartel fleet. Go out and give them a message from us. Make sure it isn't subtle either,"

"They wasted a fleet and what I imagine was a fairly large boarding party just to leave this message?" Hallan said with a raised eyebrow.

"Hey, I never said they were smart. Get out there and don't come back until you've killed some members of the Cartel,"

"No problem,"

EVE Blog Banter #12: I Don't Own a Working Phone.

EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux.

This month's banter comes to us from CrazyKinux himself, who asks the following: First there was the MMO on the PC, and now with the recent announcement of DUST 514, EVE will soon be moving onto consoles. But what about mobile? Allow your imagination to run wild for a second and describe how you would see EVE being ported to mobile devices, whether the iPhone/iPod touch, Blackberrys or Android-based devices. Dream the impossible for us!

I bet this is a good question actually. Sadly, I'm the least qualified blogger to talk about this.

If you're reading this through capsuleer on an iPhone, be advised that I have no idea how the heck you're doing that. Actually... be advised that I don't even know what an iPhone looks like. I actually typed Iphone first before looking it up to see how the thing was spelled.

Let me tell you a little something about me. I've bought two phones in my lifetime. These are phones you buy out of Wal-Mart that you have to buy minutes for or they're useless. I've never bought minutes for either of those two phones. According to the display on my last one, I need to put minutes on it by September 4th 2007, or it's going to need reactivating. Good to know.

The latest phone I bought came with 20 minutes, I used three. Mostly I just hang up on people that call me and then turn the phone off.

I also deleted all applications and games from it as soon as I got it. It's mostly just a paperweight. That said? Read the post beneath this one for actual content. Sorry CK.

    Blog Banter #11: Friendship... AGAIN?

Welcome to the eleventh installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week to post articles pertaining to the said topic. This month's banter comes to us from Joe Brusati a long time reader of CrazyKinux's Musing, who asks the following: CCP states that T3 Strategic Cruisers are just the start for the T3 line-up. In future Eve expansions what would you like to see as the next T3 ship type. Please be specific on details about what role this ship would play, cost of manufacturing, and the different modules that would be available for it, and of course you must give your T3 ship a name!

I don't like the concept of T3 ships as they are now. That makes it kind of hard to talk about how future T3 ships should be handled. Why are my answers to these excellent questions often so short?

    Screw it.

Eve Blog Banter #9: Why Won't You Die?

Welcome to the ninth installment of the EVE Blog Banter and its first contest, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. "Last month Ga'len asked us which game mechanic we would most like to see added to EVE. This month Keith "WebMandrill" Nielson proposes to reverse the question and ask what may be a controversial question: Which game mechanic would you most like to see removed completelyfrom EVE and why? I can see this getting quite heated so lets keep it civil eh?"

Dying is easy. It's living that's hard.
    Luke Spencer

Everything in the Eve universe that can kill you can die. A Titan is scaring the crap out of you? A huge NPC spawn from a level 5? A Rifter with a warp scrambler that's holding you down for that gang that's coming for your skin? POS guns? It's all killable in Eve. That's one of the beautiful parts of eve, anything that can kill you can itself be killed.

Well almost anything. Enter the Sentry Gun:

    This almost never actually happens.

So that begs the question, why? It's an exception to the rule in eve, and it's also an integral part of living in low-sec. Most high sec dwellers don't even notice or care about sentry guns, but in low-sec, they protect the gates from the predilections of pirates. As soon as a non-criminal is fired upon by anyone, they spring to life and defend truth, justice, and the CONCORD way.

Anyone that runs is a pirate. Anyone that stands still is a well disciplined pirate.

So these sentry guns begin to thoroughly kick ass. They've got huge damage potential across all damage types, and are impossible to kill. In effect, it's a built in advantage for the non-criminals of the game on gates and stations. It can be used to lull people into a false sense of security at times, and at other times it's the tipping point in a battle.

So why not take away their indestructibility? It's at least worth talking about. What would be the advantages and disadvantages?

Pro: Making them destructible would make low-sec more interesting. We're not talking about making them easily killed, at least a battleship should be required to take them down. You could clear them out before an engagement to even things up for your side. In effect it makes things more interesting because it gives you a bunch of options for engagements. On average things stay the same because it takes a special effort to take them down, but eventually they'll respawn.

Cons: Pirates would be getting a boost from this, and a fair portion of the player base don't like pirates. It might make it easier to gate camp, but gate camping happens now.

In the end ask yourself this: Why shouldn't they be killable?

Beneath this mask there is more than machinery.

Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Turrek,

    and ideas are bulletproof.

Oh. Totally didn't know. Sorry about that.

    Please don't kill me.

EVE Blog Banter #8: In the Year of Our Awesome

Welcome to the eighth installment of the EVE Blog Banter , the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week to post articles pertaining to the said topic. The resulting articles can either be short or quite extensive, either funny or dead serious, but are always a great fun to read! Any questions about the EVE Blog Banter should be directed here . Check out other EVE Blog Banter articles at the bottom of this post!

This month's topic comes to us from me, Ga'len at The Wandering Druid of Tranquility. He asks: "What new game mechanic or mechanics would you like to see created and brought into the EVE Online universe and how would this be incorporated into the current game universe? Be specific and give details, this is not meant to be a 'nerf this, boost my game play' post like we see on the EVE forums."

Eight words: Bear Cavalry... In Space, Oh yeah.

Did you just crap your pants? I just crapped my pants.

I know what you're thinking, Bears can't survive in space. Try to tell them that, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. More accurately I think you'd be dead. Don't fuck with the Bear Cavalry.

They're so awesome I'm capitalizing it every time I say it so I don't incur their wrath.

Many people would ask here, "Ok, I'm sold, Bear Cavalry sounds pretty damned awesome for a game about internet spaceships, but how would it move around?"

It'd be propelled on pure awesome. I have an artists rendition of what that would look like.

It makes a lovely desktop background as well. Bear Cavalry are just that damn good.

Now how do you balance this in a way that makes the game still playable, since they're like great and stuff. It's simple, make them really hard to get. I know what you're thinking: you make things in Eve, not get them. But lets be honest with ourselves, is there any component in Eve that could make up such an awesome construct?

It's like one quarter pornstar hooker, one quarter flying sharks, one quarter pirate ninja zombie robots, and four quarters awesome. How do you quantify that? You don't.

We'll just say that when you reach a certain level of awesome ingame(as judged by a panel of Pornstar Hookers), a Bear Cavalry bursts forth fully formed from like your forehead or something.

I'm going to go clean up my pants now.

EVE Blog Banter #7: Syphilis Doesn't Count

    Crazy Kinux says:

"Welcome to the seventh installment of the EVE Blog Banter , the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux .

This month's topic comes to us from yours truly, and I ask: 'What 3 things haven't you done in EVE and why? Would you be willing to try one day? Why so? Why not?'"

"You know son, there's alot of things I haven't done,"
    "Like what dad?"
    "Catch an STD for starters,"
    "Well that's uh... good,"
    "Syphilis doesn't count does it?"
    "Pretty sure it does,"
"Ahh well. Gallente hookers. What can ya do,"
    Caldari State Public Service Announcement

Lets go into a bit more depth here and cover stuff I'd like to do in the future, but haven't just yet.

1: Factional Warfare. You may or may not notice this, but I'm pretty big on RP. So it's only natural that I'd like to go out and fight in factional warfare. I'd probably end up on the Gallente or Matar side of things, given my understanding of the universe. This is something I will eventually do, either on Hallan or an alt.

2: Fufill a mercenary contract. I dunno if most of you know this, but my intentions in Eve are to eventually run my own mercenary corporation. I suppose that brings me to three.

3: Run my own corporation. Good/Arms Inc. has been around for as long as I've been a pirate. But it's only filled with my alts. I want to one day turn it back over to Hallan and run it as a real corporation. I like leading people, and it is something I'll have fun doing.

    Good day.

EVE Blog Banter #6: Die Bard

Welcome to the sixth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week to post articles pertaining to the said topic. This month's topic comes to us from Quintrala of Speed Fairy . She suggests to "write a short fiction story about the dissolution of the BoB alliance. It could be from BoB's point of view, the Goons', by neutrals in 0.0, civilians in Empire, NPCs or even rats. Write about before, during or after the coup; give us stories of market, war, people or love. In-character or roleplay. We want to know what happened, from those fictional characters that, in your mind, were part of it."

    Out in zero zero,
    Once was a great power,
    They conquered like heroes,
    They fell like a tower.

    They tried to fight back,
    For what it was worth,
    They seemed to lose track,
    Resistance was birthed.

    In their regions they stood,
And in Delve they did fall,
To some Goons from the Hood,
And the Goons took it all.

    Think this is funny?
    Don't think it at all,
    Bob's like a bunny,
    Quick to drop the ball.

All the spies in the game,
    Didn't help them be good,
Try it next time with pain,
Try it next time with blood.

    Annoyed by the Goons?
    I Guess that's your call,
    Winning is a boon,
    Justifies it all.

    From the inside easy,
    From the outside it's hard,
    Still empires are lazy,
And that's all from this bard.

    Eve Blog Banter #5: Uh...

Welcome to the fifth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. This month's topic comes to us from Mynxee of Life in Low Sec. She asks "Alts and Metagaming: Is playing two accounts who are logged in at the sametime and work together (hauler/miner, explorer/combat associate, trade alts in trade hubs) a form of metagaming that is "ruining the game"?"

Apparently there were some issues with getting this to me in time. I didn't realize it was up till it was already up on other people's blogs. Despite the problems, hey we're full steam ahead.

I've decided to go into a really in-depth reply on this topic. The thing about alts has been something I've given quite alot of thought to in the past, and I welcome the opportunity to go into some detail about my opinions on whether they are ruining the game:

    No.

Check out the other guys who apparently had more time than me to make a response!

    EVE Blog Banter #4: I Don't Know.

Welcome to the forth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by yours truly.

This month's EVE Blog Banter comes to us from Manasi of A Mule in EvE. Manasi asks "How do we, EVE bloggers, adapt to changes as they are thrust upon us (speed changes, no more ghost training, all the Dev blogs, etc), or as our lives make playing the game different (more time, less time)?"

Of course we adapt. Of course we change. I mean, I haven't been around long enough for any real game changes to affect me. I'm sure it's a big deal to others but to someone new to the game like myself, I've yet to see any big game changes that really impact my play.

I've always flown small light ships, so the speed "nerf" was a boost to me. It didn't affect my playing style because I've always flown small light ships.

I'd already trained probing skills before the wormhole stuff came out. That might affect me later, but it isn't changing my plans for now.

Come to think of it, since I've only been around for one "expansion" I'm probably not the best person to answer this question. Ahh well, at least I can provide my readers with links to other people that can do a better job.

The question of how the time I'm available changes how I play the game is an interestingly simple one. I have therefore a simple explanation.

When I have more time to play, I play more. When I have less time to play I play less.

    Good Day.

EVE Blog Banter #3: What Not To Do.

    CrazyKinux:
This month's EVE Blog Banter idea comes to us by Roc Wieler of Roc's Ramblings. Roc's asks us to "write a story about a fellow EVE Blogger, or an EVE player whom has inspired you or affected you in some tangible way. After your story, describe why you chose them, and any Holiday wish you have specifically for them".

I remember running missions. I picked it up pretty quickly, but I was in a corporation that had a number of people along for the ride that for some reason or another just could not figure it out. There was a fellow I knew, whose name is unimportant. The fellow could not figure out how to do a damn thing. The worst part was that he had bought quite a few game time cards and had huge ships bought and ready to go.

He discovered that his Caracal couldn't handle a level three mission. He upgraded to a Drake, he lost that as well. Upgraded to a Raven, he lost that as well. He went into a Caldari Navy Raven and got a friend to come along in a Hurricane. They both died.

He decided at that point that the game was too hard to play and promptly quit, never to be heard from again. He taught me three things. Pay attention, fit properly, and have an IQ over 80.

    I won't forget him.

I chose this fellow because he inspired me to double my efforts to learn this game. I knew it would be hard, but I also knew I was better than that guy.

As for holiday wishes, I'd like to wish for him to come into Evati with a nice juicy Caldari Navy Raven and meet me at a safespot. Mmmm, tasty.

"This month's EVE Blog Banter comes to us from Brinelan over at The Shard (http://www.theshard.org). He asks: What drew us into EVE, what keeps us playing the game and what brought us back if we've ever left?"

I enjoy the space combat genre of games. I played an old game called TDZK which was a text based EVE, I played Elite on the NES and it's sequels. Loved Wing Commander. Loved Freespace. Absolutely fell in love with Freelancer. The truth of the matter is, I love space combat. It is by far my favorite genre of game.

That said, EVE has a hell of a learning curve, but I'm sticking to it cause I know in the grand scheme of things I'm not doing so badly. That's right, I'm sticking around cause I know I'm learning it faster than some other new guys are.

If you look around at other MMOG's out there you'll find a lot of good ones and a few great ones. EVE stands head and shoulders above the rest.

I love a universe I can just immerse myself in, I love that I can do whatever I want. I love that it gives me an entire universe to play with. I can mine, hunt, police, build an empire, break one down, or watch it fall. I can hire myself out as a merc, research ships or technology. I can explore the universe and make money doing it.

This is my time. If anyone wants to take it away they'll have to fight me for it, and I like my chances.

    Good Day.

PS. If this appears shorter than you expected, realize I just found the email 30 minutes ago saying this had to be up today. I don't actually check my email... ever... so uh... yeah.

    EVE Blog Banter #1: Ambulation

I wonder if they'll ever understand
The trials of a freedom seeking man
So have a round on me my friend
    What else can we do
You know I always love ya
But I think it's time that we flew

This month's topic comes to us from PsycheDiver: Ambulation: What are your hopes for your avatar and new functionality of stations?

    The whole world went black.

    Reloading.

Hallan Turrek felt the warm liquid draining around him. The neural shunt released and he let his head lean forward. He reached behind his head and rubbed the hole.

"Never gonna get used to that," he muttered to himself.

The capsule's top opened and he reached for the ladder in front of him. The station control had warned him the hangar he was docked in would have no gravity, due to a malfunction on that deck.

    "That's alright," he'd said.

He propelled himself lightly towards the hole above him and grabbed the edge of his pod as he exited. His body jerked a moment, and his iron grip pulled him down along the side of the pod. He pushed away and floated against the wall. He grabbed a length of railing that ran along the entire wall. Using the railing, he worked his way through the ship to his shower.

The fine mist of water impacted on his skin and bounced off for a moment before it was sucked through the walls. The slime was always annoying to clean. It found it's way into your ears, nose, under your fingernails, and any place that would hold it. After what seemed like an hour, he went into the next room and changed into his station clothes. Like any pod-pilot who wanted to go unnoticed, he wore a hat, a wide brimmed "cowboy hat". His blue-jeans were well worn, and he donned a simple t-shirt emblazoned with the Quafe logo. He put a leather jacket on, one made from the hide of a particularly annoying Bruzen he'd met planet side in Nourvukaiken.

The Bruzen are stand about as tall as a human on four legs, and are primarily meat eaters. Before humans came to Nourvukaiken, they were the dominant species, and they've longed for that place again for a thousand years. He'd met one in a camping trip on leave from the navy. The thing decided he belonged in it's food chain, and tracked him for a few days before Hallan had to put a bullet in it. The meat was tender.

He picked up his holster and pistol and ran his hand down the smooth leather. He pulled the gun out and pointed it at the wall. He pulled the trigger, and the hammer refused to fall. Despite it's appearance as a standard six-shooter, it was a high tech piece of equipment, and it wouldn't work on a station. He put the belt on and put his gun back in it's holster. He turned to the door and made his way to the cargo ramp.

He laughed out loud as the workers fumbled around outside. He smiled as his shoes gripped the floor. He'd spent enough time in partially built stations to know, always have a pair of MagnaBoots™ on hand.

He knew where he was headed before he exited the ship. A Jovian he knew owned a little bar here, and he needed to be there. The Jovian's trade in information, and that was something he sorely needed right now. The drinks were good though, and the atmosphere was unbelievable. The Jovian's apparently had access to long forgotten music from the past, because Hallan could never place the songs, and the proprietor wouldn't say where they were from. It was among the finest pilot's lounges he'd visited.

He walked into the promenade with a bit of relief. A lot of pod pilots can be recognized on sight, Roc Wieler, Mynxee, Ka Jolo, Kane Rizzel, he pitied them sometimes. Sure, billions knew who Hallan was, but trillions knew who those pilots were, and it sometimes made it hard to walk around freely. Hallan was relatively fresh to the scene, and unknown in this neck of the woods, so he was enjoying his anonymity for now.

He walked past the flashing lights and the doorman of the "By Jove" without even looking at them. At least one person knew who he was, which wasn't a bad thing sometimes. The Jovian at the bar smiled in his direction and Hallan walked to the bar.

"My friend!" The bartender said over the music.

"Who sings this?" Hallan said, pointing upwards for no reason other than that it seemed like the thing to do.

"Procul Harum," The bartender answered, still smiling.

"Never heard of 'em," Hallan said with a chuckle.

"I know," The bartender said, matter of factly, "Are you here for business?"

    "Yes I am,"

    "What do you need?"

"The Caldari Navy's got a job for me, and while I'm loath to run it, they've told me if I do it, I'm off the hook with them, forever,"

"You know, my assistance comes with a cost," The bartender said, his grin widening.

"Of course, and they gave me this for you," Hallan passed him a datachip. The bartender slid it into the compstation he'd installed next to his register. It looked like it'd seen more use.

The bartender looked over the screen and stated quickly, "This will do," he typed something up on the station and switched the datachip for another. After a few short minutes he handed it back to Hallan, "A gift, from me,".

"So, about that information," Hallan began, taking the datachip from the bartender.

"Oh, the Gallente lady you're looking for is in that booth over there," He interrupted, while pointing, "She's waiting for her blind date with a Caldari Achura that roughly matches your description." The bartender, his grin fading, turned around and began pouring a couple of bottles into a glass.

"How'd you know that's what I was coming in here for?" Hallan asked, his eyebrow raised in suspicion.

"I'm Jovian, it's my job to know," He held two drinks as he turned around and spoke, "This one is for her," he said handing one to Hallan, "And this one is for you," he said, handing the other to Hallan as well.

"Thanks," Hallan said, as he made his way over to the booth.

The Gallente was extremely attractive by any measure, but her face was pale. It betrayed a lifetime spent on stations. Hallan sat down and handed her a drink. She smiled and put her hand out. Hallan shook it and smiled back.

"So, I heard you work for Combined Harvest," He said, sipping his drink.

Hallan's eyes were open in the darkness. She'd fallen asleep an hour ago, but he hadn't wanted to risk waking her. He slowly removed himself from her embrace and slid to the floor. His clothes took a bit more time to put on than they took getting off, but he managed it fairly quickly. He walked over to her personal compstation and inserted a special datachip. The encryptions took several minutes to break, but eventually he was in. He downloaded all of the available information back onto the chip and put it into his pocket. The Caldari software, if he was correctly informed, had just erased any indication of the data breach. Unless someone went digging for it at this compstation, no one would know. He looked down and then up at the door. He walked over to the door and opened, it, and as the light shined through from the outside onto her nude form, he panicked.

He shut the door immediately and creeped back over to the bed. He reached out and grabbed his hat off her head as she smiled in her sleep. A minute later he was gone.

    And so it was later,
As the miller told his tale,
That her face at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale.

Until I started on this blog post I had no idea what the hell Ambulation was. I'd seen one video a month ago. It took a bit of digging to find out what it was about. Apparently we're gonna get to amble about. I enjoy roleplay, and anything to help my writing about this universe is going to be welcome. What would I like to see? I want boarding parties, I want person to person station combat, I want games to play, I want real interaction with agents, I want full immersion in a universe that is already a lot of fun to be in.

That is what it does come down to, it's already a lot of fun, so I hope whatever they do doesn't hurt that. It seems they have it in mind already not to force this change on anyone who doesn't want it. That is good to hear, but I definitely do want it. I want to see my character outfitted how I like, and bit more freedom with his portrait. I want, when I have time, the ability to walk into the repair bay, to haggle a price for the hull repairs on my rifter. I want to see the repairman's surprised face when I haul that baby in full of holes. I want to go to the pilot's lounge and play a game with some other pilots. I want to beat someone within an inch of his life, only to have him medivac'd at the last second and healed to full health.

I'm gonna have fun no matter what.

    Good day.
